Adding video to your site?

Written by Spiders and Milk Wednesday, 20 May 2009

If you’re thinking about online video, it’s worth considering how you want it delivered. In simple terms you have two options.

The first is known as “progressive downloads” and the second is called “video streaming”.

With progressive, the video is actually inserted or “embedded” into the programming code for your web page.

There is of course a downside.

With progressive you have to wait until your computer has saved enough of the video into the memory before it’ll start to play.

And, depending on the quality of your computer  and the video length,  you might get a lot of stuttering as the computer has to save more and more data. You'll probably know this as "buffering".

Also the data-file can be copied to another web page without you ever knowing.

Streaming overcomes the stuttering and security issues, because the video is actually being held on a totally separate server .

As you click to watch the video, a message is immediately sent to this server to start playing it.

Whilst video streaming has its advantages, there is usually a small charge for the service.
